After the jump: All the latest Caulfield Cup news.
Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse, located just eight kilometres from the centre of the city, is regarded as one of Australia’s premier horseracing tracks. Affectionately dubbed ‘The Heath’, the track is home to the Melbourne Racing Club and holds about 20 racedays annually. Over the course of these events the track comes to life for the running of some of Australia’s most iconic races being the Blue Diamond Stakes, the Underwood Stakes, the Futurity Stakes and of course the Caulfield Cup.
The track itself is of a triangular shape with three straights. After a period of reconstruction on the racetrack, Caulfield widened to 30 metres which increased its circumference by an extra 43 metres. Being a Victorian racetrack, all races which take part at Caulfield are competed anti clockwise and spectators can watch the thrilling action on the track whatever the weather with the full-glassed Rupert Clarke stand.
The Caulfield Racecourse was initially constructed in 1859 however proper racing did not occur on the track for another 17 years. In 1879 the racecourse held the first ever Caulfield Cup which of course has become a feature event on the Australian horseracing calendar. During World War II Caulfield Racecourse was used as an army camp and therefore closed down, as a result the Caulfield Cup was transferred to the Flemington Racecourse. In more recent history the track closed in 1995 due to reconstruction on the course, which resulted in another 30 metres added to the width.
One of the busiest times at the Caulfield Racecourse is the spring when the track hosts a part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival – arguably the most exciting period in the Australian horse racing year. The Caulfield Cup is the obvious highlight, while the Group One Underwood Stakes is another. With a fantastic array of facilities and venues on offer to guests at the track, Caulfield truly is a hub of horse racing excitement, so make sure you get along there one day to feel the thrill of the Caulfield Racecourse.
