Tomorrow the first of the ‘Big Three’ Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival Group 1 features will take place at Caulfield when the 2010 Caulfield Cup runs as Race 8 at 4:05pm (AEDST).
The 2010 Caulfield Cup field features 18 horses plus one emergency, with Shocking set to start as the favourite.
Reigning Melbourne Cup champion Shocking is currently paying $5 to win the 2010 Caulfield Cup at Ladbrokes.com.au, the punters getting right behind the Mark Kavanagh-trained five-year-old.
Over the past 24 hours Shocking has firmed in from $6.50 to $5 with the continued rain on the Caulfield track ruling out a number of other contenders that won’t be at their best on the wet ground.
Shocking, on the other hand, is seen as a favoured choice on the rain-affected track having won the Makybe Diva Stakes on a Heavy track last month carrying two kilos more than the 57 kilos he is allocated tomorrow.
Also being drawn a little wider in the field with barrier 12, set to come in to barrier 11, is also attracting the punters to Shocking as the inside running will likely be too choppy by the eighth race tomorrow.
Despite all the hype and obvious favouritism for Shocking, it is a very open-field running in the Caulfield Cup tomorrow and there are a number of other horses with claims that we think are better value picks.
Best Each Way Picks: # 12 Alcopop and # 13 Herculian Prince Ladbrokes.com.au
For punters seeking more value Alcopop is drawn out wide but this could be a blessing in disguise, while Gai Waterhouse’s Herculian Prince has performed on a Heavy track before and was very strong winning the Group 1 The Metropolitan last start, which has produced eight of the past 12 Caulfield Cup winners.
If Track Heavy 8 or Worse: # 7 Manighar $11 Ladbrokes.com.au
If the track is rated a Heavy 8 or worse Luca Cumani’s European raider Manighar, well accustomed to soft ground, is our favourite coming right into the mix.
Best Roughies to Add into Trifecta: # 3 Mr Medici, #9 Monaco Consul and # 15 Descarado Ladbrokes.com.au
When getting on the exotic markets with Trifectas and Box Trifectas three roughies to include in the conditions are Hong Kong’s Mr Medici who is coming off a last start win overseas on very soft ground, Kiwi galloper Monaco Consul right in calculations with the rain, and Waterhouse’s other starter Descarado who has been abandoned after a 14th place finish in the Turnbull last start but if you can forgive that race he will relish the soft ground tomorrow.
