Bart Cummings’ emerging stayer Precedence has been awarded a 1.5kg penalty for the 2010 Caulfield Cup, but is still a long way from securing a spot in the final field for the October 16 race.
Five-year-old Zabeel gelding Precedence was handed down a weight penalty by the VRC’s Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter earlier in the week for its win in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley last Saturday.
Precedence is $8 second favourite to win the Caulfield Cup at Ladbrokes.com.au despite being 47th on the order of entry
Despite the weight increase from 50.5kg to 52kg for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, however, Precedence is still well down the order of entry for the spring carnival features.
The penalty elevated Precedence to 37th in the elimination order for the Caulfield Cup and 47th for the 2010 Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday November 2.
Leading online bookmaker Sportsbet have Precedence as the $8 second favourite to win the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup behind stablemate Dariana at $7.50, and are paying $11 for him in the Melbourne Cup betting.
Third declarations for the Caulfield Cup will be taken next Tuesday October 5 and a decision on whether connections including, part owner Dato Tan Chin Nam, will pay up for Precedence to continue on the Cup path will be made at that stage.
There is still the option of running Precedence in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) on October 9 to qualify for the Caulfield Cup, but would give the gelding just seven days in between runs.
If he doesn’t make the Caulfield Cup field or connections decide to bypass the race, other spring options for Precedence include the Group 1 Yalumba Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on the same day as the Herbert Power.
