Bart Cummings’ star Zabeel gelding Precedence has shortened into the second favourite to win the 2010 Caulfield Cup but is in danger of missing out on a spot in the field.
Five-year-old Precedence firmed from $15 into $8 at Sportsbet to win the $2.5million Caulfield Cup on October 16 following their smart win in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
Precedence will likely need to run in the Herbert Power Stakes on Oct 9 to earn a spot in the Caulfield Cup field
A close second favourite, Precedence trails just one other Caulfield Cup contender, stablemate Dariana who is at $7.50 through Sportsbet.
Despite the victory and love from the punters, however, Precedence could still not get a start in the Cup as he is well down the order of entry at equal 42nd in the ballot.
Cummings is desperately hoping Precedence will earn a weight penalty for his JRA Cup victory, crucial as the horse has just 50.5kg currently.
The VRC’s chief handicapper Greg Carpenter will announce the penalty today, but with 2kg needed to push Precedence into the field, it is likely Cummings will have to run the horse again before the Caulfield Cup.
Carpenter has never given a JRA Cup winner more than a 1.5kg penalty, handing last year’s victor Alcopop just 1kg.
The Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield on October 9 is next on the agenda for Precedence to try and ensure a start in the Caulfield Cup field.
