2010 Caulfield Cup Favourite Moudre Attempts Ballot Exemption in Naturalism Stakes

September 15th, 2010

Early 2010 Caulfield Cup favourite Moudre will attempt to secure their spot in the $2.5 million race by contesting the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield’s Underwood Stakes Day this Saturday.

Ciaron Maher’s consistent five-year-old Moudre is leading the way in the Caulfield Cup betting markets currently the top elect at $10 through Sportsbet.

If Moudre wins Saturday’s Naturalism Stakes he is guaranteed a spot in the 2010 Caulfield Cup

Despite being the shortest-priced entry to win the Caulfield Cup on October 16, the consistent Blevic gelding is yet to qualify for the spring feature and is currently equal number 45 in the order of entry.

Maher is attempting to gain a Caulfield Cup ballot exemption for Moudre this Saturday via a win in the Naturalism Stakes.

Victory in the Naturalism Stakes will ensure Moudre is exempt from the cup ballot guaranteeing the gelding a position in the Caulfield Cup final field and further firming their odds to win in the betting markets.

The Naturalism Stakes winner will also earn a penalty for the 2010 Melbourne Cup on Tuesday November 2 at Flemington, giving Warrnabool-based Maher further reason to cross his fingers that Moudre wins.

If Moudre backs up a Naturalism Stakes victory by finishing eighth or better in the Caulfield Cup, he will qualify for the Melbourne Cup field.

Also entered for the 150th Melbourne Cup, Moudre is currently a $17 chance in Melbourne Cup markets at Sportsbet.

Moudre has had 12 career starts to date for six wins including his last start victory in the Listed Heatherlie Handicap (1700m) at Caulfield, which was his maiden black-type success.

Saturday’s Naturalism Stakes will be Moudre’s first run at a distance greater than 1800m and will prove his potential as a true Cup contender that can stay the two miles of the Melbourne Cup.

Many other Caulfield Cup hopefuls are among the 26 gallopers nominated for the 2010 Naturalism Stakes, making for a very competitive affair and a real test for Moudre.

Failure on Saturday leaves Maher with a few last grasp options of a Caulfield Cup exemption for Moudre including the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley on September 24 or the Group 2 Herbert Power Handicap (2400m) the week before the Caulfield Cup.
